1984 Olympic 1500m Final – Los Angeles

Genuine Memorabilia, sold with authenticity certificate

This is a print signed by Steve Ovett, Sebastian Coe and Steve Cram as they enter the final lap.

Even without taking into account all the obstacles Coe had to overcome, in isolation the 1984 Olympic 1500m final was simply an incredible race. The field was exceptionally strong - in addition to the British trio were the silver and bronze World Championship medalists Steve Scott and Jose Manuel Abascal. The early pace was set by Sudan's Omer Khalifa and then American Scott before Spain's Abascal flew to the front with 600m remaining, and at the bell he still lead, with Coe, Cram and Ovett in that order in single file immediately behind. As Ovett dropped out, and at the top of the back straight Cram made his move. However Coe immediately responded and surged in front of Abascal into lane one. Coe seemed completely untroubled from this point, gliding along in his apparently effortless style as he surged away from Cram down the back straight to finish the last lap in 53 seconds and his last 100m in 12.7 seconds, for an overall new Olympic record of 3.32.53 as he became the first man to defend the 1500m title.
